His story

Joseph Stagg in the U.S., Revolutionary War Rolls, 1775-1783

Joseph Stagg is a fascinating figure whose life bridges both British and American history. Born on 17 February 1750 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England, he later emigrated to the American colonies and became involved in the Revolutionary War. His service in the 2nd Battalion of the Continental Troops places him among the early patriots who helped shape the United States during its fight for independence.

Joseph Stagg served in the 2nd Battalion of the Continental Troops in the American Revolution. On August 22, 1780, his rank was “Matross.” A matross ranked next below a gunner. The duty of a matross was to assist the gunners in loading, firing and sponging the guns. They were armed with muskets and bayonets. They marched with the store-wagons, acting as guards. In the American army a matross ranked as a private of artillery.

He married Mary Mills.

The 1810 United States Federal Census records his residence in Flemingsburg, Fleming, Kentucky on August 6, 1810.

He died in 1816 in Fleming, Kentucky, at the age of 66.

Footnotes

  1. This record likely comes from early minister returns or county marriage abstracts, as formal bonds or licenses from that period are often missing or incomplete. The marriage was probably recorded after the couple had already been together for many years, as their children were born well before 1797.
