My ancestors in the United States

Ida Antha Stone (1861-1930)

BIRTH: Apr 1861, Pennsylvania, USA
DEATH: 5 Oct 1930, Douglas, Oregon, USA
FATHER: Jacob Stone (1822-1888)
MOTHER: Eliza Ann Ayers (1830-1922)
SPOUSE: Hudson Randolph Staggs (1848-1916)

When Ida Antha Stone was born in April 1861 in Pennsylvania, her father, Jacob, was 39, and her mother, Eliza, was 30. She married Hudson Randolph Staggs on August 5, 1880. They had four children in 10 years. She died on October 5, 1930, in Douglas, Oregon, at the age of 69.

Her story

The following is an excerpt from Staggs Genealogy – Harold Wareham Staggs – His Book

Ida Antha Staggs, nee Stone, my Grandmother, was a blue-eyed, robust woman with a wonderful sense of humor. She liked to roam the mountains and beaches in Oregon. I remember her as always jolly, laughing and wanting to go someplace or do something.

Her life wasn’t too easy; she had to raise the children and take care of all problems. Remember that Grandad was away from home about 90s of the time building mills. Ida wouldn’t let anything bother her. Life was just too short for anything but the joy of living it.

I loved her house in Roseburg, it was meant to be lived in and enjoyed. Things were wonderfully messed up and cluttered. Of course it was clean, but a long way from sparkling. The kind of a house that everyone just felt at home in. Ida would bring things back from her trips and walks and, of course, the reason she brought them was that they were odd or beautiful so they would be placed on a table, shelf or any other darn place for others to enjoy. We boys, when we last visited her, spent hours handling things from objects Grandad had brought from China to lovely shaped bits of wood from the beach.

Her garden was full of flowers. It looked as if Grandmother seeded it by standing in the middle of the yard and throwing the seed into the air. Her table was as wonderful as she was. Every meal was delicious but nothing fancy, just plain food meant to be eaten with lots of noise.

This story will tell you a lot about her. When our home in Roseburg burned to the ground Ida reacted as follows: Wild yells from Dad awakened her and she ran down to the first floor, saw the trouble and went back to her room. Down the stairs again, coat on, bird cage complete with bird in one hand and a brand-new hat she had bought the day before in the other. She then walked across the street and sat down on the porch of a friend’s house to enjoy the fire. Just how often does one get the chance to watch a good fire? Not very often, I’ll tell you, so Ida had the sense to sit back and enjoy all the excitement and flying sparks.

Oh, it was a grand sight! The men did manly things, hollering out orders, forming bucket lines, rushing in and out of the house carrying things, stopping once in a while in the light of the blazing fire to wipe sweat from manly brows. Women shrieked, clutched children, sobbed into their handkerchiefs and did other appropriate things. Kids jumped, yelled, ran, pushed each other and in several cases probably wet themselves.

Yes, a grand sight indeed, and Ida, Mother said, sat there, eyes flashing, watching it all and hugging herself excitedly. It was just a wonderful night for a fire! Way to go Ida, love you.

Ida died October 5, 1930 and we all miss her. She’s buried with Grandad and Aunt Edith in the City Cemetery, Roseburg, Oregon.
